The 2008-09 school year is finally under way, so I'd like to begin by welcoming our brand new chancellor, G. David Gearhart, to the UA. Chancellor Gearhart has pledged to "put students first." His arrival marks a tremendous opportunity for the UA administration to heal the rifts that have developed between the decision-makers and the students.

Dear EarthTalk: Everyone knows we should recycle metal, glass and plastic cans and bottles, but what about all the lids, tops and caps? I see people recycling plastic bottles, for example, with their caps on, but I've always been told to thrown them out. Is that wrong? -- Stefanie Gandolfi, Oakland, CA

It seems the two most common complaints from students ages 18-24 pertain to high gas prices and insufficient, overpriced parking on campus.
It's puzzling that these two issues have come in a pair, but even more enigmatic is that the requests of those who complain are granted so readily.

I vividly remember the day four months ago when we held the historic Constituent Assembly (CA) election in Nepal.
"The stench of blood has finally died down. Leaving behind the debris of old and feudal Nepal, with the election of the long-awaited Constituent Assembly tomorrow, we are headed toward the formation of a new and prosperous Nepal, and I am excited."
Those words filling the pages of my diary have not yet dried.

After publishing an article last week on the sexual harassment case ("Tenured professors resign to avoid third investigation" - 08/18/08), it was natural that there would be some comments on our Web site.
What I didn't expect was to have my e-mail account bombarded by anonymous messages from both sides, so perhaps it's best to clear up a few points here.

Imagine someone spent years of his life making something for you. He put tremendous energy and talent into his effort, sacrificed financial resources and often gave up time he could have spent with his family. The result was an amazing work of art that entertains, inspires and uplifts you.

One would think chancellors are supposed to spend more years at a university than their students, unless they too are planning to graduate and move on to bigger and better things.
Since 2004, UMKC has had five different people in charge, so unless you're a really exceptional student, you may have had a difficult time keeping track of who's running the show here.
