Students were handed a new Dell laptop when they enrolled. Although the laptop was handy, the contract is up and things are open for change.

Darin Hart, laptop and computer program manager, has been testing each company's offer.

One of the main things he's looking for is a warranty service.

Maintenance is what the Laptop Center is for. Laptop problems can be assessed and dealt with directly and in house.

Dell is changing their line of computers and the laptop center won't be able to offer the same kind of maintenance because of the change.

"Some companies want us to send the computers back in if they have problems, and that will be a problem in many ways," said Hart.

There are three companies being considered, including Toshiba.

Toshiba is being reviewed especially for their version of the Tablet PC.

This computer's main trick is the LCD screen that revolves and folds down to feature a notebook.

The concept is students can take notes on the Tablet easier, and it will immediately transfer to a word document.

Some students have already played on the Tablets. Marilyn Craft, elementary education sophomore, said, "The Tablets are totally awesome. They're so cool."

But Hart says the college might end up going with Dell. "We have a budget, and we're trying to get the most machine for money."

Some students haven't had any problems with their computers.

Courtney Putnam, athletic training sophomore, said, "I like that we can take them to class and that we are able to use wireless throughout the campus."

Others have complaints Hart is already aware of and looking to improve in the new models.

Kerry Sonnenburg, elementary education junior, said, "The laptop is really heavy and really big. I'd like to have something a little easier to carry to class and handle."

The laptop decision won't be known to students until they arrive back on campus in the fall.

Nicki-Kay Nichols, physical education sophomore, said, "I'm anxious to see what the new laptops will look like."
