"Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" was a children's show in which viewers tried to guess where she was headed. After the Leadership team's announcement of a "mystery trip" to an inner-city, the correlation is very similar.
After the tragedy in Greensburg in 2007, the Leadership team had their annual trip clear in their minds. The team helped clean up and rebuild all they could and their efforts were much appreciated.
This year, the team is taking a new and interesting theme on their trip.
The "mystery trip" will be a classified location until the team members arrive May 12 at Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport. But not everyone is in of the dark.
The team is divided into colors by the year each member has been on the team. The first year team is white. The second is silver. The third is purple. The fourth year members are on the black team.
The purple team is always in charge of planning the trips. For each trip, a coordinator is selected by Cheryl Rude, director of Leadership.
Caitlin Smith, sport management junior, is planning this year's trip. Smith organized every detail from the plane ride to where they would be staying.
Smith said, "We will be serving a homeless population for three and a half days. We'll be doing everything from serving in soup kitchens, to sorting clothes with direct interaction."
Smith said she hopes that a lot of people will walk away from this trip with first-hand knowledge about other parts of the country in need of help.
"The trip is focusing on a lot of aspects of reality that most students don't get to experience, especially in Winfield," said Smith.
Although Smith is the coordinator, the team is still working together.
Lyndsie Oathout, biology junior, is a member of the third year team. She said, "We're still all going to make decisions as a team."
But since the trip was announced with an undisclosed location, some students have tried to figure it out. Recently, there have been rumors circulating the campus about the actual destination. Smith was not bothered.
"Even if anyone knows, the team is still really excited and ready to help out."
The Leadership team is not acknowledging any of the rumors and hopes that some students won't ruin it for the rest of them.
All of the members are going on the trip with the exception of about 10 people who have conflictions with athletics and other obligations.
Most of the team will return May 19. The seniors will return May 22, using those extra days for a senior trip.
"Our purpose is to serve out of unselfish hearts," said Smith.
